Pinaceae Juniperus communis L.

Source: Magness et al. 1971

Juniper berries are the fruits of the small, evergreen juniper tree. The berries are about 0.33 inch in diameter, dark blue, nearly globular, smooth-skinned, with a sweet, bitter flavor. They become near black when dried, and are used in the manufacture of "gin" drinks. The characteristics of the berries are due to a volatile oil.
